Expectations for future FLEGT action
Facilitators: James Hewitt and Giacomo Luchetta
The FLEGT Week is an important opportunity for all stakeholders to interact collectively and formally with the evaluation team and provide their views on achievements and weaknesses, on gaps in the design or implementation of FLEGT action and on recommendations or expectations for the future. This session is not aimed at any of the specific areas of action of the Action Plan, but rather at providing participants with an opportunity to share their views on the future of the Action Plan as a whole, on measures it should contain and ways forward, or on the way FLEGT action should be managed.
Starting with a brief assessment of progress made towards meeting FLEGT objectives and addressing underlying problems, participants are invited to share their views and concerns on such instruments as the VPAs and EUTR, as some of the most visible measures of the Action Plan. However, the main discussion will focus on the changes in context in which the Action Plan is situated, which may require an adjustment of priorities or fields of action, or changes in the way FLEGT action is managed.
The session is expected to identify expectations and opportunities for future FLEGT action, in the context of the experience gained and of changes in the FLEGT environment.
- What progress has been made to meeting FLEGT objectives and addressing underlying problems? What are the obstacles, shortcomings in implementation or changes in context that need to be addressed in future action?
- How can future FLEGT action best address the shortcomings that are still relevant, and adapt to the new situations? Are any additional measures (not necessarily within the EU FLEGT AP) needed?
- What should those managing the EU FLEGT AP do to obtain sufficient support for such measures?
Representatives of all FLEGT stakeholder groups: government, civil society and private sector from the EC, the EU Member States, FLEGT partner countries and other producer and consumer countries.
